In September 2018 we will start the first specialist support service in Swansea for people negatively impacted by hoarding and their friends or families.
People who are hoarding will be invited to join workshops for six weeks, providing information and exercises to help reduce their hoarding. These clients will be assigned a ‘buddy’ to provide weekly 1:1 encouragement each week or to be with them if they need "time-out" during workshops.
When workshop sessions end, clients can join peer support meetings for eight weeks to track de-cluttering progress and share what works for them.
We will also run eight peer support group meetings for friends/family members of people who hoard, enabling them to provide appropriate support and lessen the negative impacts on their own mental health and wellbeing. We will also look at supporting children and young people affected by hoarding, in tandem with our current development of CYP services.
In addition we shall develop our multi-agency work with the Swansea Hoarding Action Partnership (HAP). Training and information about hoarding disorder will be provided to staff in the partnership's agencies working with people who hoard to improve service response
We hope that by the end of the project:-
People with problematic hoarding behaviour will feel more able to address and manage the behavior, leading to improved mental health and wellbeing.
Family/friends whose mental wellbeing is impacted by hoarding behaviour will gain insight and provide more effective support plus gain peer support to improve their own mental health and wellbeing.
Up to twenty local agencies and service providers will have staff with increased skills and knowledge relating to providing effective hoarding support, reducing the pressure on services.
